Media Security and Media Forensics

Visiting Lecturer: Prof. Dr.-Ing. F. Hartung

This lecture is not given in the winter semester 2023/2024.

Course Outline

While digital storage and transmission of multimedia data has many advantages in terms of quality, functionality and costs, it also eases the production of digital copies in perfect quality. Where copies are unauthorized, this results in copyright infringements and financial losses. Content protection technologies have been developed to prevent unauthorized copying. The lecture introduces and discusses some of those technologies. The lecture has two main areas: Digital Watermarking, and Digital Rights Management / Copy Protection technologies.

Digital Watermarking

Watermarking technologies do not directly protect data, but allow to imperceptibly embed information like serial numbers into multimedia data. This can be used to identify individual copies of media data, or to embed auxiliary information.

Digital Rights Management (DRM)

DRM technologies aim at protecting and controlling digital content, typically by combining encryption with key management systems. Several DRM technologies are introduced that have been developed for different distribution media, like CDs, DVDs, and online distribution over the Internet and Mobile Networks. Trust models, that means implementation rules for end devices and legal frameworks around DRM technologies, are also discussed.

The lecture will be held in English. Lecture slides will be available for download (see announcement in first lecture).
